Tonight we had a great first evening at CCV. We collected 25 bikes and many of them are in excellent shape and will need very little work before we can give them out to some great kids. We are excited and nervous for tomorrow as the generosity from the members at CCV might create a bike storage issue for us. Anyone have some warehouse space or storage units we can use for a bit?
We are still in need of volunteers for our Bike Drive on May 3rd and 4th. Please let us know ASAP if you can help even for just a few hours. We need to staff the following locations:
- May 3rd – 4:30-7:30pm in San Dimas
- May 4th – 8:30am-1:30pm in San Dimas
- May 4th – 9:15am-1:30pm in San Dimas
- May 4th – 8:30am-1:00pm in Rancho Cucamonga
- May 4th – 10:30am-1:00pm in Covina
- May 4th – 5:15pm-7:30pm in San Dimas
Even if you can only help for a couple of hours at one of these locations it would be a tremendous help!
When we decided that we wanted to make 2014 EXTRAORDINARY, we had to pause for a moment to think of what that involved. Sure, the obvious answer was to give more bikes to more kids to positively impact more lives. But, how do we want to do that?
Goal #1 – Do a better job of marketing our program to get the word out to more families and more kids. Based on the first quarter of this year, that has been a success.
Goal #2 – Find a way to get more bikes. We are working on that now with our bike drive with CCV along with developing an agreement with a large trash hauler to collect bikes.
Goal #3 – Raise enough funds to purchase more helmets and more parts for increase in kids and bikes in our program.
With these 3 goals in mind, we also have a wish list that will help make all of this come together in a more permanent manner. We are seeking assistance from individuals, community groups or corporations, that may assist us in bringing our wish list to reality.
- Warehouse space for storage of at least 100 bikes. Incycle Bicycles has been very generous in offering us space, but as we expand our program we really need a large dedicated space to store bikes during the rehab process.
- Workshop space to rehab bikes and offer regularly scheduled maintenance days to kids in the community.
- Fundraising specialist – An individual or organization that has experience and can assist us with in raising funds for organization.
If you or someone you know can help us with our wish list, please contact us.
CCV, with locations in San Dimas and Rancho Cucamonga, is hosting a bike donation drive for us on May 3rd and 4th. Today they released their first public outreach notice and it brought a sense of reality to this whole project. You see, CCV has a membership base of more than 5,000 and it may be 6 or 7,000 now, and they don’t do many things on a small-scale. For Thanksgiving each year their membership donates enough food to feed thousands. For Christmas their membership donates enough toys to host a Christmas store for more than 2,000 children. Just a couple of examples of the large-scale that they take on with their events. In the 3 years that OMM has been in existence, we have struggled to collect bikes and have many times run out of bikes while kids waited on a long list. Our largest giveaway to date has been about 60 bikes, but most are 20-25. Well, May 3rd and 4th has the potential to change everything! While we have no idea how many bikes may be donated, it has the potential to be in the hundreds. Storing these bikes, repairing them and giving them out will need to be done on a whole new level. We are incredibly excited for this and I believe it’s going to be an amazing weekend and help us take OMM to the next level.
We still need some help on May 3rd and 4th to volunteer at the various CCV locations to collect bikes and share information about OMM. If you have a few hours to help us on one of these dates, please let me know. We will also likely need some people with trucks and/or trailers that may be able to help us transport all the bikes.
The bike donations are coming in, but we still need more to fulfill all the needs we have from families! The rehab work will start at 10:00a.m. and we have asked the families to hold off until noon for the giveaway portion of the event. That gives us 2 hours to complete a ton of work. I hope that many of you can join us. Lunch and treats will be provided for all volunteers!
Also, we are still looking for people who can assist us the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. We have a major outreach event planned and need volunteers to assist us Saturday evening along with Sunday morning, afternoon and evening. You can help out for even a couple of hours during one of those periods, it would be a tremendous help!
Please don’t forget that our next event is April 12th from 10:00a.m. – 2:00p.m. at the San Dimas Incycle. We need all hands on deck right at 10:00a.m. as we will be inviting families from our waiting list to start picking up bikes at noon. The first two hours of the event will be critical. As always, lunch will be provided for all the volunteers.
We’ve been working hard the past two months to raise funds and collect bikes for the roughly 40 kids on our waiting list. We scheduled our next event on April 12th from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. at the San Dimas Incycle. We should have quite a few bikes on hand that will need repair so we need lots of help cleaning these bikes and getting them ready.
Also, Christ Church of the Valley has graciously offered to host a bicycle collection drive for us the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. We are looking for volunteers to help us staff tables on Saturday evening, three different locations on Sunday morning, one Sunday afternoon and one Sunday evening. If you can assist for a few hours Saturday evening or anything on Sunday, it would be terrific. We also need a few Spanish-speaking volunteers for Sunday afternoon at their CCV Español service.
If you read our original 2014 calendar, we had planned to host a rehab and giveaway event tomorrow. Unfortunately, we need bikes and have cancelled this event until we can get our hands on some more bikes. We still have about 40 kids on our waiting list and trying to do what we can to collect enough bikes to fulfill all the current needs.
If you don’t have any spare bikes that you can donate, you can always help by using our www.Buy4OMM.com website whenever you do online shopping. You can still use your favorite online stores like Amazon and any membership discounts or coupon you may have. OMM receives money directly from the online retailer through a donation back to us as a percentage of your purchase. It’s painless and helps us raise funds to buy more helmets and bike parts.
Also, don’t forget that we have our Wine Tasting Event on March 1st from 5pm – 9pm at the San Dimas Wine Shop and Tasting Room. Tickets are $20 and include 6 tastings. You don’t want to miss this fun event.
We are pleased to announce that we will be having our first Wine Tasting Fundraiser on March 1st from 5 – 9pm at the San Dimas Wine Shop and Tasting Room. Tickets are $20 and include 6 4oz. pour tastings of some great wines you will not find in your grocery store. Beer and cheese plates will also be available for sale for those of you who do not enjoy wine.
Advance purchase tickets are available by contacting Matt Hawkesworth via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at (909)264-1598. Tickets will also be available at the event. You may RSVP via Facebook here.
Wow, today’s event was simply amazing. We rolled in at 8:45a.m. to start setting up early and found our friends from OTR already setting up. While this was a great site to see, we were a bit shocked that we already had a family sitting on the curb waiting for the bike giveaway at 10:00a.m. By 9:45a.m. there were several families already waiting and I believe there were about 30 kids. We were expecting about 20 kids for the entire day, so we quickly knew we were in for something big. Kids and families seemed to be appearing from everywhere and before we knew it there were well more than 60 kids waiting for bikes. My post below from last week discussed the desire to make 2014 extraordinary and that’s just what happened today. We emptied the trailer, the warehouse, and all the bikes that were donated today. By the end of the day we gave out more than 50 bikes and still have about 40 kids on a waiting list to get bikes. What that means now is that we need more bikes!! We have only a handful of small girl themed bikes and that is it. I think we all felt so blessed to be a part of today as it really was a special event. Thank you to everyone that came out today and pitched in. We had a number of new volunteers come out today, which was fantastic, and we had volunteers that have been with us since the start. Every one of you make such a difference and the small group of four who started OMM are so grateful for your commitment and willingness to make our dream of helping kids a reality. Here’s the LINK to the photos from today’s event. We need to regroup after today, order more parts and supplies and get our hands on some more bikes. As soon as we can get the inventory built back up, we will schedule our next event.
